The Man With The Standard Notch Lapel
Made with no crew and a cast with no prior acting experience over the course of only about 12 hours, "The Man With The Standard Notch Lapel" is a dark comedy short film produced in part for an independent study focused on the art of lighting at the University of Colorado. The film was selected as part of The Bluffs Film Festival.
The primary goal of this project was to practice various cinematic lighting techniques and styles. Each scene features that art as its focal point, culminating in a bold and unique final sequence that takes everything to the next level, both narratively and technically.
I served as director, writer, and editor among other roles.
By Faith
I was hired by this lovely family to edit a short documentary pilot about their journey into full-time RV’ing. Shot by my wonderfully talented colleague Silas Karbo, By Faith is a story about love, family, perseverance, and the will to make the choices you know are right for you despite what others might say.
Documentary is one of my favorite genres to work on, so this was a joy to edit. I love piecing together raw, emotional moments from real, genuine interviews to thread together a narrative that tells a story that audiences can click with and take with them throughout their lives long past the runtime is over.
Larry’s Lights
This may be my favorite documentary I’ve edited personally. Shot as part of a documentary filmmaking course at the University of Colorado, Larry’s Lights explores how one man left a lasting legacy at a local bowling alley and touched the hearts of so many patrons and employees alike.
I served as lead editor on this project, and crafting this narrative using such honest and raw interviews like the ones from the lovely DeRubis family was a privilege.
The Sculptor
I loved being lead editor on a short documentary film about my favorite sport, rock climbing. Similar to Larry’s Lights, The Sculptor takes a peek inside a seemingly innocuous location (in this case, Kevin’s garage) and explores the lasting positive impact one person can have on so many people.
The Sculptor follows a different approach to storytelling than other documentaries I worked on. I worked with director Noah Elliot, crunching for a class project for hours in the editing bay, to devise a chapter-by-chapter structure for The Sculptor to follow that breaks down a lifetime-spanning narrative into more digestible chunks.
The Bluffs Season 8
I worked on all three episodes of season eight of The Bluffs, including directing the third episode. Directing a large crew for a piece of narrative television was an incredible experience that taught me a lot about large productions and allowed me to explore unorthodox problem solving and creative expression.
The Bluffs S9E2
I worked as an assistant editor on this episode of the ninth season of The Bluffs. It was a new and exciting experience to be on a more sizable team than I’m used to. I learned more about editing workflows on larger projects with larger teams, and grew my collaboration skills.
Breaking: Newsroom
I helped work on this student film as gaffer. Getting to work with some of my talented colleagues like Jacob DeMeyer and Clay Bowen was really gratifying, and solving lighting problems both indoors and outdoors with creative solutions was a really fun challenge that I believe helped bolster my gaffing skills.
Scared
I helped out on this student short by serving as gaffer. I had a blast using our limited GVM light kit and tackling challenges like blocking multiple windows to try and get shots with some dimensionality to them. Playing with contrast, backlights, and bounce was a fun playground to explore.
